Mumbai:
Bunty Jahagirdar, one of the key accused in the 2012 Pune serial blasts case, was shot dead by unknown attackers in Shrirampur town of Ahilyanagar district on Wednesday. Police said the attack took place around 2 pm on Borawake College Road, when Jahagirdar was returning from a burial ground on a two-wheeler along with another person.
Details of the attack
According to Ahilyanagar Superintendent of Police Somnath Gharge, Jahagirdar was attacked by two assailants riding a motorcycle. He suffered multiple bullet injuries in the attack. He was rushed to a nearby hospital immediately, but doctors declared him dead.
“The reason behind the attack is not yet known. Several police teams have been formed and the investigation is underway,” SP Gharge said.
Criminal background of Jahagirdar
Jahagirdar, who was in his mid-50s, was earlier arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for his alleged role in the Jangli Maharaj Road serial blasts in Pune. On August 1, 2012, four low-intensity bombs exploded at busy locations near Balgandharva Theatre, a Dena Bank branch, a McDonald’s outlet, and Garware Bridge, causing panic in the city.
Apart from the blast case, Jahagirdar had several criminal cases registered against him in Ahilyanagar district, including murder, assault, and criminal intimidation. He had been out on bail since 2023 in the Pune blasts case.
Police have launched a major search to track down the attackers. CCTV footage is being checked, and witnesses are being questioned. Officials said they are also looking into possible gang rivalry angles and concerns over the safety of people with criminal backgrounds in the area.
